A city pulsating with energy, Bangalore has indeed come a long way from being the
sleepy cantonment town that it was during the British Raj. Originally a sedate and
stately city, characterized by its quiet, broad streets and lush green spaces, Bangalore
has recently been transformed into a major business hub for south India and is known
by some as India’s ‘Silicon Valley’.
The Silicon Valley of India, Bangalore portrays a multi linguistic society whose
life is centered around the posh techno city offices. Bengaluru, as the city is
officially called, is the final word in the IT field. As the city is bursting with
the presence of several MNCs, Bangalore plays a significant role in the future of
India. Being home to various public sector undertakings, software companies, heavy
industries, telecommunications, aerospace, heavy equipment, machine tools, and defense
organizations, Bangalore has developed into one of India's foremost fiscal centers
and is referred to by CNN as one of the "finest places to do business in the
hyper world".
Bangalore which is now officially known as Bengaluru is a derivative of the words
Benda Kalooru. It is said that in the year 1120 AD, when the Chola King Veera Ballalla
reached this place after losing his way in the jungle during a hunting trip, an
old lady offered him shelter for the night and served him baked beans for dinner.
As a sign of gratitude to the lady, the King constructed a town and named it Benda
Kalooru which means baked beans. The present city of Bangalore took shape courtesy
the visionary efforts Kempe Gowda, the modern architect of Bangalore who built a
mud fort in the city and made it the province of the Vijayanagara Empire. Many emperor
ruled Bangalore after the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire.
In 1689 Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb leased Bangalore to Chikkadeva Raja Wodeyar. At
this time the city became part of the Kingdom of Mysore. In 1759 soon after the
death of Krishna raja Wodeyar II, Haider Ali - Commander-in-Chief of Mysore Army
declared himself the ruler of Mysore. Haider Ali created much trouble for the then
east India Company. Later after the death of Haider Ali, His able son Tipu Sultan
became the ruler. From the beginning he went into conflict with the British. Tipu
Sultan for his courage and chivalry came to be known as the Tiger of Mysore. However,
in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1799 Tipu Sultan faced a defeat and Bangalore
was eventually incorporated into the British East Indian Empire. In the year 1831,
Bangalore was made the regional administrative city and a huge cantonment was built
here.
Bangalore experienced speedy development during the periods 1941-51 and 1971-81,
by the influx of scores of immigrants from other parts of the state. Subsequent
decades had shown a sustained development with the arrival of private companies
and multi national companies. Towards the end of the 20th century, Bangalore has
become the focal point of India’s IT revolution.
